Cable Car Crash Kills 14!Inportance of Wire Rope Inspection

2024-09-29

A cable car cabin fell in Piedmont, northern Italy. The cabin was about 300 meters away from the top of the mountain when it suddenly fell from the 80-meter-high cable car line to the ground, killing 14 people.

Through analysis of the metallographic structure and the relevant metal equipment, investigators found that the cable breakage was not caused by excessive force, but rather by damage such as fatigue and corrosion on the wire rope itself.

Investigators emphasized that this phenomenon could have been discovered during maintenance, and the accident could have been completely avoided by replacing fatigued and corroded wire ropes.

Nowadays, many scenic spots have sightseeing cable car equipment and many scenic spots at high altitudes or will mostly choose sightseeing cable cars. Wire ropes, as an important component of this type of mechanical equipment, play an important role.

However, problems such as wear and aging of the wire rope have brought certain safety hazards to the safe operation of the cable car. Therefore, maintenance and inspection work is a necessary measure to ensure the daily safe and stable operation of the cable car wire rope.

At present, Luoyang TST Flaw Detection Technology Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as "TST") possesses the world's leading "full magnetic detection" core technology, and has overcome the world's century-old safety management problem of non-destructive testing of ferromagnetic metal components (wire ropes). It adopts an original sensor full magnetic information extraction method and applies unique cloud storage big data analysis and processing technology to professionally provide customers with ferromagnetic metal components (wire ropes) non-destructive detection technical services.

TST's independently developed real-time online intelligent flaw detection system for wire ropes has been fully applied in many companies.

TST intelligent flaw detection system can effectively and quantitatively find various internal and external damages of wire ropes: broken wires, wear, rust, fatigue, kinks, deformation, loose strands, etc. It can monitor the operation of wire ropes in real time, and issue early warnings and alarms, give test results that meet standard requirements, generate a comprehensive report on the use of wire ropes, and make predictions on the future safety of wire ropes.

"The wire rope was rusted at 38 meters, with a damage index of 4.8%. There was 3.2% internal wire breakage at 90 meters. This online monitoring system is really powerful. It detects in real time, so we no longer have to waste time and effort on manual inspections during the dog days of summer." This was a conversation between a customer and the wire rope owner when they were reviewing the flaw detection report at the installation site of the real-time online intelligent flaw detection system for wire ropes.

The introduction of professional wire rope testing equipment can effectively prevent rope breaking accidents, reasonably reduce rope costs, and improve wire rope operation efficiency.
